Subject: a two-bar theme with a leap up a minor sixth, a falling scale, and a diminished-seventh arpeggio into the tonic. It has a countersubject that works above or below it.
Exposition (bars 1–9): the voices enter alto, soprano, tenor, then pedal, with a one-bar link before the tenor.
Middle section (bars 10–25): entries in E♭ major (soprano), G minor (tenor) and F minor (alto, manuals only). They're joined by episodes: two circle-of-fifths sequences, a manuals-only passage and a chain of suspensions.
Stretto (bars 26–29): tenor, soprano and alto enter one bar apart.
Ending (bars 30–37): a descending bass line leads to a soprano entry over a held G in the pedal. The pedal then has the final entry, and the tenor states the subject once more over a held low C. It ends on a C major chord.
The soprano goes up to c''' in the E♭ entry, the top of Bach's manual range. The tenor switches to treble clef for the last three bars to avoid ledger lines.
